Many children play in the sand box
But only a few make a beautiful castle.

"I perform SEO"

But... do you? Are you sure? Every time we hear this phrase from a hotel it turns out that:

They have a nephew that takes care of that.
They read something in a book dating from 2004
They think it is about adding key words, as many as possible.
They bought some expensive software that will do the trick.
They have learned about seo in the cafe around the corner.

SEO is a craft and is about very carefully balancing all elements and blending them into a whole.

If any of the strategies above would have any effect, every hotel would be on top of the search engines.

"I do not have to understand"

Because I have someone who takes care of that for me, so it is not important that me myself I understand.

OK, that can be true when it comes to GDS or IDS connectivity, even key word advertising.

But the whole point of SEO is that YOU understand it. If not you will advance only babystep per babystep, and will forever be in need of annual contracts.

Literally all hotels world wide are thinking out loud about internet marketing, or are busy with it, or have outsourced it, or heavily invest in it... and it is not working, not working, not working. How is that possible? It is possible because the internet is still a new phenomenon, and comes with very, very much confusion.

"I spend money"
I spend 500€ per month on key word advertising, so it must be good.

Wrong, very, very, very wrong. There are hotels that spend 50€ per month only and attract more customers.

Because it is all about the right structure of the key word campaign, and the relevance of the key words, the titles and the descriptions.

"Let's first start..."
Let's first finish our new website and then we will think about SEO.

Terrible. SEO is not the cherry you put on the cake. It is the plate and the main ingredient.

Common Misconceptions
"A beautiful website is a good website"
Misconception Number One. That if a hotel spends thousands in a truly glamorous website, the reservations will come.

Wrong. There is nothing as easy as creating a 'beautiful' hotel website. Web designers are creative, artistic people, and love creating something that is truly beautiful, intensively and with much concentration working on a hotel website.

What they are not is marketing specialists. They look through their eyes and your eyes, but never the eyes of the search engines or the market.

As a matter of fact, most of the truly smashing websites in this world are simply never found online.

"An expensive advisor is a good one"
Yes, I have an advisor, and you should see the glossy slide shows and the figures and the expensive jargon such as "unlocking conversion potential", really, a true professional.

No comment. What you experienced was a sales demonstration, which in many cases is meant to give you the impression you get value for money.
